The London borough of Southwark is about to get an upgrade with the introduction of free Wi-Fi hotspots.
Southwark Council is the second council across London to provide free Wi-Fi hotspots using BT’s InLinkUK service.
The second stage has been delivered by the London Borough to distribute BT’s InLink UK unit with the free Wi-Fi service.
BT has announced it will install over 100 street units across Southwark, giving residents internet access with a speed of up to 1Gbps. The initiative between BT and the council will also provide services such as mobile device charging, free UK landline line and mobile calls and real-time information like Tube service updates.
The borough’s council hopes the initiative will help with its plans to deliver better digital services across the council, to those living and commuting in the area.
Councillor Peter John, OBE, leader of Southwark Council, said: “Southwark’s residents, visitors and businesses will benefit hugely from the array of digital services offered by the new InLinkUK from BT street units. The enhanced connectivity and easy access to local services will help support Southwark in its ambition to become a digital Council.”
The initiative aims to provide residents living, working and travelling through Southwark with ultra-fast Wi-Fi to make daily journeys and jobs much easier. BT will place the services across the busiest areas of the Borough such as business districts, tourist areas and shopping centres.

Underground Wi-Fi to benefit commuters
Camden was the first London Borough to provide the service and BT said the initiative will make a huge difference to the residents of the local councils and hopes to expand the service further in the future.
Neil Scoresby, BT’s general manager for Payphones and InLinkUK said: “It’s great news that we’ve started to roll-out the next generation phone box in Southwark. The digital services will make a big difference for people on-the-go who all need information quickly whether they live there or are visiting this lively borough and want to discover more about it.”
The services are now live across Southwark Borough.
