Digital Equipment Corp is about to announce development of a 1 Gigabits-per-second data encryption chip, to be used in the development of hardware for 1Gbps networks. The company is expected to launch the chip at the Boston, Massachusetts-based IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference, but but the news of the impending announcement came from Camarillo, California-based Vitesse Semiconductor Corp, which developed the basis for the chip in its Fury 15K gate array. The chip is claimed to draw a third to a half less power than competing gate array technologies. Vitesse builds semi-custom digital Gallium Arsenide integrated circuits for commercial and military customers, which other companies use by customising for specific applications.
