Prime Computer Inc, Natick, Massachusetts yesterday increased the power available to its users who want to install their machines in an office environment with launch of the mid-range 4450 system, accompanying it by the low-end 6150 computer-room system. The company rates the 4450 at up to 5.8 MIPS, up to 40% more powerful than the 4150, and uses the same high-performance peripherals as its larger computers. The 6150, rated at up to 8.5 MIPS, is the new entry level point for computer-room systems from Prime, coming in below the 6350 and 6550, to which it can be upgraded by swapping boards. Both the new processors are implemented in ECL, and both are available immediately. 4450 system packages start at $290,700, and include the 4450 CPU with 32Mb memory, one 496Mb disk with intelligent controller; office peripheral cabinet; PT250 terminal and system console; and Primos licence. For the 6150, configurations start at $443,400 including CPU; 32Mb memory; one 770Mb disk with intelligent controller; peripheral cabinet; PT250 terminal and Primos. The company has also introduced a new upgrade program for 50 Series systems. The programme establishes a trade-in credit for every 50 Series computer now installed to be applied against the purchase of new, more powerful systems. The credits will follow a four-year schedule, with values set according to a computer’s age, and going down to a minimum 15% of the original credit after four years.
