Phoenix Technologies has aligned HyperSpace, an operating environment for mobile computers, with Moblin project. The company plans to focus on the commercialisation of HyperSpace with OEMs and ODMs.
Moblin is an optimised open source Linux operating system project that is expected to deliver internet and media experiences on Intel Atom Processor-based devices including MIDs, netbooks/nettops, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and embedded systems.
The company expects that HyperSpace would bring Phoenix optimisations for instant-on, power management, security, virtualisation, and network connectivity to Moblin-compliant systems.
Doug Fisher, vice president of Intel Software and Services Group and general manager of System Software Division, said: The combination of Moblin and HyperSpace will deliver a more satisfying and rich experience for ultra-mobile consumers. Both improve instant access to the web and other applications, dramatically extend battery life, and optimise emerging new classes of ultra-sleek, ultra-mobile computing devices, including Intel Atom processor based netbooks and nettops.
“We look forward to joining forces with Phoenix to encourage OEMs and ODMs to use Moblin-based operating systems on netbooks and other small form factor devices.
Phoenix has also partnered with Yahoo for HyperSpace-optimised search directly from the user interface as well as with Google Picasa and Adobe Photoshop for photo editing, storing and sharing.
