British mobile carrier O2 has released a new structure of tariffs which allows users, for the first time, to use their phones as a modem to connect their laptop to the Internet for free.

The change in tariffs is a drift from O2’s previous strategy of a charge to enable tethering of computers to 3G data plans. Studies show that around 70% of new customers go for net-connected smartphones.

O2 said in a blog, "For the first time, Internet Tethering is completely included in our data allowances, so you don’t have to pay a penny extra for it."

O2 has included Internet tethering as part of data allowance of users. Earlier, users had pay about £7.65 for the service.

However, the new tariffs are applicable to new customers. Customers already having a contract with the mobile carrier will have to wait for the contract to expire first.

The new pay monthly tariffs charge £3 per month for 100MB, £6 for 500MB and £10 for 1GB of data.
