Google has unveiled a plan to build a data centre on the site of a former coal-burning power plant in Jackson County Alabama, US.
The facility will mark the 14th data centre for the company, which will host applications and services in the cloud.
The search giant is planning to repurpose Widows Creek coal power plant’s existing electric and other infrastructure for the new data centre.
Google is one of the Silicon Valley giants who has committed to use 100% renewable energy sources, with the company working towards the goal by making major acquisitions from the renewable energy sector.
The company plans to use Widows Creek coal power plant’s electric transmission lines to bring in renewable energy for the operations of the new facility.
Google has already teamed up with Tennessee Valley Authority to bring the power onto their electrical grid and find out new renewable energy projects in the region.
The Alabama data centre is expected to use energy efficiency technologies, and the company’s existing super-efficient servers.
Google said that it will use new methods to cool the data centre which will help reduce wastage of water and use machine learning to get more out of every watt of power consumed.
The company said that with the usage of new age technology it has been able to generate 3.5 times the computing power out of the same amount of energy.
