The Avaya network for Nellis and Creech is based on Avaya Communication Manager IP telephony software running on a series of Avaya servers and gateways.

Communication Manager software is an extensible IP Telephony foundation on which Avaya delivers Intelligent Communications to enterprises. According to the company, Communication Manager scales from less than 100 users to as many as 36,000 users on a single system and to more than one million users on a single network. Avaya leverages the SIP protocol to improve the connectivity and openness of Communication Manager.

Avaya has said that all the software and hardware implemented in the Air Force communication system have been certified for security and interoperability by the US Department of Defense, Defense Information Systems Agency, and Joint Interoperability Test Command.

With Avaya Communication Manager, the bases have converged voice and data transmission trunks and can take advantage of the software’s automatic failover features. In the event of disruption in the main transmission line, Avaya’s software automatically re-routes calls without disrupting conversations. In addition, an Avaya gateway provides Creech Air Force Base with ‘survivability’ so it continues to have access to communications in the event of a failure in the network or the host systems housed at Nellis.
