IBM Cloud has launched a DevOps Service for enhancing app quality and functionality.

The new DevOps tools on IBM’s Bluemix developer platform enables dev teams to better control code, helping businesses reduce unexpected app downtime and increase functionality. This, in turn, looks to support developers on the rapid implementation of new features.

IBM Cloud DevOps Insights, which is currently in beta, automates the quality of code to help achieve a better user experience.

It allows developer teams to set policies with respect to modifications and updates made to specific apps. The teams can block the deployment of changes that do not meet the requirements, enabling them to keep risky updates and code that are not properly vetted or tested from disturbing an app’s performance and usability.

The use of DevOps Insights will allow a team to create a policy to better guarantee the quality of code being written for a new app feature, making sure that any code being implemented will have passed at least 80% of tests around security and functionality.

The policy will combine the tests and their results with a built-in gate, which would automatically asses and analyse the test results of every piece of code being delivered.

If a piece of code does not clear in the tests, it would be stopped at the gate.

Increasing further visibility, IBM DevOps Insights gives developers a single dashboard to see which versions of an app’s updates, features and tests are running and where, as well as when the tools and types of tests being used vary.

The new service supports popular test result formats, like xUnit, Mocha, Karma, Instanbul and Blanket.

As Bluemix and its services are built on open standards, DevOps Insights can be easily integrated with other tools. It also supports Jenkins pipelines.

Bluemix, which was launched in 2014, is one of the largest open, public cloud deployments in the world.
