Microsoft’s Azure is giving customers more choice for big data projects in the cloud with the addition of MapR and Hortonworks.
Hadoop offerings from MapR and Hortonworks will be on accessible on the Azure cloud platform, with MapR Distribution and Hortonworks’s Data Platform 2.3.
MapR’s offering includes an HDFS and POSIX compliant file store, its NoSQL data store and its Control System management tool. It’s Distribution will also be integrated into the Azure Data Lake, which will enable tiered analytical and storage capabilities.
The Hortonworks platform has already been available on Azure, but the upgrade to the recently released 2.3 will deliver greater ease of use along with improved security, governance and operations.
The enhanced UI comes thanks to its integration with the Apache Ambari project, which has been developed to support easier provisioning, management and monitoring of Hadoop clusters.
The Hortonworks platform will be supported for deployments’ on Azure virtual machine instances and will be available on Windows Server and Linux.
T K Rengarajan, corporate VP, data platform, Microsoft Cloud and Enterprise division, said: "The distribution also includes core Hadoop projects such as Hive, Impala, SparkSQL, and Drill, and MapR Control System, a comprehensive management system.
"When MapR is available in the Azure Marketplace, customers will be able to launch a full Hadoop cluster based on MapR as an Azure Virtual Machine with a few clicks."
Both platforms will be available on Azure from later on this summer.
