Bay Networks Inc has attempted to grab the network security high ground with a new framework intended to provide a suite of manageable enterprise-wide security services for local network access, router services, remote access and network management. It is called BaySecure, and the announcement was accompanied by first launches in the new system, BaySecure LAN Access, which is shipping now. This takes the form of two 10Base-T host modules for the company’s System 5000 and Distributed 5000 systems, with Advanced Agent management software, and Bay claims the product is fully integrated with its Optivity network management system. The new host modules will cost $5,000 for the System 5000 and $1,100 for the Distributed System 5000. Bay has also turned to CheckPoint Software Technologies Ltd for its FireWall-1 offering, to be embedded into all of its routers during the fourth quarter, making it the first integrated router and firewall system, says Bay. The BaySecure FireWall-1 product is designed to enable network managers to implement access control policies across virtual local networks, campus backbones and wide area connections. For configuration and management, Bay will also resell and support CheckPoint’s FireWall-1 application module, which is available for Unix, Windows NT and Windows95 systems. Other features planned as part of BaySecure include hardware- and software-based encryption, which will be implemented across the whole router line. Bay is also planning to enhance the Xylogics Remote Annex multiprotocol remote access servers and Nautica remote access servers with support for the Remote Authentication Dial-In User authentication and accounting protocol.
