Open Source backup and recovery software specialist Zmanda Inc has outlined a simple process for hot disaster recovery to the cloud that will back-up an entire Windows environment to a public storage cloud such as the Amazon Simple Storage Service.
The service can be set up to schedule automatic back-ups of files, applications, databases, networked devices and Windows system state, including Active Directory, to Amazon S3.
Pricing for ZCB comprises a one-time $50 charge for each Windows server protected and a flexible pay-as-you-go cost of $0.20/GB/month for storage used and data transferred into the storage cloud.
The Zmanda Cloud Backup (ZCB) service is designed to appeal to SMBs, where simplicity, and ease of use are deemed particularly important, the vendor said.
Zmanda has been selling an enterprise edition of its backup software for a couple of years, and the company today said it would also be extending the reach of its application and database agents for its corporate issue.
It has announced a beta version of Amanda Enterprise 3.0 that will include live backup agents for the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007, PostgreSQL and EnterpriseDB’s Postgres Plus lines.
The product upgrade will allow administrators to carry out disk-to-disk-to-tape and disk-to-disk-to-cloud backup operations. Security for Windows clients has also been improved to ensure data is protected with strong levels of encryption during remote backup and recovery operations.
Zmanda’s software came out of the University of Maryland and competes in the backup space with the likes of Bacula Systems SA.
