Security firm Symantec has launched a new licensing model, SymEd that which will help academic institutions protect information as well as manage and secure their IT infrastructure.

The new model supports the technology demands in academia by combining the applications for threat management, data protection, virtualisation, encryption and endpoint protection.

SymEd will enable educational organisations to select additional Symantec applications to meet the needs of individual departments. It also provides an enterprise-wide platform within the academic institution.

The new application offers a centralised management platform to secure, manage multiple endpoints: PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones for both faculty and students whether they are school-issued or personal devices.

The new licensing model is based on full-time employee (FTE) count rather than per device, enabling institutions to plan budgets by counting FTEs once per year and to estimate costs year to year.

It also provides secure e-Learning environment for physical, virtual and cloud platform, reduces licensing costs with application streaming for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) initiatives and also supports multiple operating systems including Windows, MAC OS, iOS, Android, Linux.

SymEd features centralised standards to allow institutions to automate the deployment, security and management of devices with central management. It offers critical data protection with advanced local backup and recovery for Windows desktops and laptops.

The new licensing model offers a simplified method to ensure license compliance across the institution, a student usage add-on option for Endpoint Protection and also provides home use rights for faculty and staff.

Symantec U.S. State & Local Government and Education national director Mike Maxwell said, "This model allows institutions to secure devices and applications in their environment, protect data and infrastructure from attack and manage inventory and configuration with scalability."
