South Korea has alleged North Korea is behind cyber attacks in March that affected thousands of computers and took electronic banking sites and ATM networks offline.

South Korea’s Ministry of Science, Information and Computer Technology, and Future Planning claimed that the attack was carried out by North Korean military intelligence.

Additionally, South Korean investigators alleged that the code involved in the attack resembled North Korea’s earlier hacking patterns previously linked to Pyongyang.

According to reports, 30 out of 76 programmes recovered from infected computers were similar to those used in earlier strikes and about 22 of the 49 internet protocol (IP) addresses involved in the incidents were in line with those deployed in previous attacks, it is claimed.

Korea Herald cited the South Korea government’s statement, which was that the attackers gained control of personal computers or servers within the target organisations eight months ago.

"After maintaining monitoring activities [they] sent out the command to delete data stored in the server, and distributed malware to individual computers through the central server," the statement said.
