Faronics, an IT service provider, has introduced an application whitelisting software Anti-Executable 4, which is designed to offer flexibility for administrators and users controlling workstations and servers.

The new Anti-Executable 4 provides expanded reporting and visibility for files and applications and halts the malware threats including zero day and targeted attacks like spear phishing, by only allowing approved applications to run on a computer, the company said.

It said that the any other program which is unwanted, unlicensed, or unnecessary are blocked from ever executing.

The new offering also includes the company’s Identifile, a feature that checks files against a signature database and reports on manufacturer name, file hash, version, and whether the file is malicious.

This feature facilitates improved workstation protection through a stronger understanding of files and their properties.

In addition, a new Temporary Execution Mode (TEM) feature allows unrestricted file execution for a specific time period based on users’ need.

Using the above feature users can have flexibility to manage special projects or use specific programs without any whitelist restrictions, said the company.

The TEM Reporting feature also allows users to run a report on executed programs during Temporary Execution Mode.

Faronics anti-executable product manager Carlos Santamaria said despite increasing validation of application whitelisting over traditional IT security approaches, some IT professionals are still hesitant due to scalability and operational limitations.

"With version 4, Anti-Executable has strengthened its security and functionality, confirming its position as a leading application whitelisting offering that is secure and easy to manage," Santamaria said.
