Microsoft has announced that its Authenticator app will no longer support the password autofill feature after August 2025. The company has set a deadline of 1 August for users to export their stored credentials, as access will be permanently removed after this point.
The transition is part of Microsoft’s broader move to consolidate autofill and credential management within its web browser, Microsoft Edge. The decision affects users on both iOS and Android who currently use Authenticator to store and automatically fill in passwords and payment information.
Beginning in June 2025, users will no longer be able to save new passwords in Microsoft Authenticator. In July, the autofill functionality will stop working altogether, and any stored payment details will be deleted from devices. By August 2025, all previously saved passwords and any unsaved generated passwords will become inaccessible in the app.
Microsoft has advised users to migrate their stored credentials to Microsoft Edge. “Your saved passwords (but not your generated password history) and addresses are securely synced to your Microsoft account, and you can continue to access them and enjoy seamless autofill functionality with Microsoft Edge,” said Redmond.
To enable autofill through Edge, users must download the Microsoft Edge browser and set it as the default autofill provider on their mobile device. This involves navigating to device settings, selecting the autofill section, choosing Edge from the list of password managers, and signing into the browser using a Microsoft account. Once completed, stored passwords can be accessed under Settings > Passwords within the Edge browser.
Users not wishing to use Edge may export their stored credentials from Authenticator before the cut-off date. Microsoft has clarified that exported data must be saved manually to another password manager, such as Google Password Manager or Apple iCloud Keychain, before the August 1 deadline. Payment information must be manually re-entered for security reasons, as it will not be included in exports.
Impact on passkeys and future usage
Despite the changes, Microsoft has confirmed that support for Passkeys within the Authenticator app will continue. Users who rely on Passkeys for account login must ensure the Authenticator app remains active, as disabling it will also deactivate any linked Passkeys.
The password autofill feature, initially launched in December 2020, allowed Authenticator users to manage login credentials across apps and websites. Microsoft’s announcement marks a strategic effort to consolidate security features within its browser ecosystem and move away from decentralised password storage.
Edge, Microsoft’s browser, now acts as the central platform for password autofill, supporting syncing of passwords and addresses stored in Microsoft accounts. Features like Password Monitor, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, and in-browser autofill are expected to replace the outgoing functionality from the Authenticator app.
Microsoft reiterated the importance of taking action before the deprecation deadlines to avoid permanent data loss. Export functionality within Authenticator can be accessed via Settings > Autofill > Export Passwords, with saved data available for use in other compatible platforms.
