A new Windows-based software package enabling voice communication over the local network has been launched by Northvale, New Jersey-based VocalTec Inc. Called VocalChat, it is claimed to offer an inexpensive alternative to voice mail (if only for internal use) and enables audio messages and conferencing between local network-based groups. The package needs Windows 3.1, a network adaptor and any Windows-compatible audio device, including the company’s own CAT product. Data communications can take place simultaneously, as a result of the use of speech compression and automatic detection of idle periods. Volume is controlled through a graphical Windows interface, and network activity can also be viewed through this interface. If the individual or group members called are away from their desks, messages are recorded through the automatic answering machine mode. System users can also record their own greeting messages, as with voice mail. VocalChat costs $400 but is initially available for $100 per network as a special offer. Product is expected to be available in August.
