Under the terms of the deal, Redwood Shores, California-based Oracle’s server technologies division will use VMware as the standard virtualized development for Linux and Windows for x86 platforms, deploying more than 7,000 VMware virtual machines.

The deal also goes beyond internal deployment with a commitment from Oracle to continue to deliver an evaluation version of Database 10g from within VMware’s virtual infrastructure, building on the 12,000 copies of Database 10g that have already been distributed via VMware.

Oracle and VMware will also provide joint problem resolution for Oracle’s server products running on VMware, with Oracle intending to provide the same level of support for its products running in a VMware virtualized environment as it would for products on physical hardware.

The two companies are also collaborating on engineering and performance optimization of Oracle on VMware virtual machines, as well as assessing the benefits of joint solutions to customers deploying Oracle Grid technologies in VMware environments.

On the marketing side, Oracle also intends to market solutions including VMware’s virtualization technologies focus on hardware consolidation, while joint solution and deployment guides for Oracle migrations and hardware consolidation are also in the works.
