Texas Instruments Inc is to pay $575m for the disk drive-related analog and mixed signal chips business of TDK Corp’s Silicon Systems Inc. The Japanese tape media maker could receive additional payments up to $50m based on future performance of the business. It did not say whether Silicon Systems was profitable, but estimated that its revenues were about $400m and Texas is acquiring a large proportion of that. Silicon Systems, acquired by TDK in 1989 (CI No 1,153), employs about 2,000 people worldwide and has its primary operations in Tustin, California with other operations in Singapore, California, Colorado and Tokyo.
