The announcements were made at the National Retail Federation convention in New York.
Sun said the architecture will provide a comprehensive methodology for the design, build and testing of RFID solutions using Sun’s Java System RFID Software stack. Proof of concepts will be made available via Sun’s iForce partner development centers worldwide.
The architecture will also come with a vertical slant, initially targeting the needs of government, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, and retail organizations.
Sun said it is working with integration software vendor SeeBeyond Technology Corp to develop a solution architecture for retailers.
The company also unveiled entry-level Java-based tagging and ship management technology to help companies comply with immediate RFID mandates set forth by retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores, Target, and Albertsons, as well as the US Department of Defense. Sun said the technology enables suppliers to process product cases and pallets in one or two seconds, which will allow companies to meet retail RFID mandates in about a week.
Sun is providing a special tag-and-ship solution bundle that includes hardware, software, configuration services, and training. Sun’s Java System RFID Software runs on Solaris and includes tagging and reader technology.
