Sun Microsystems Inc has been remarkably reticent in talking about its Solaris-on-PowerPC plans. It says it is too early to talk, but promises that there will be further announcements when IBM Corp announced its Power Personal systems. Luckily, one of our colleagues on IBM System User, attending a soiree last week discovered a journalist’s blessing: a slightly-sozzled Sun employee. Before the employee was rescued by a roving public relations minder, the hardware guru spilled the fact that Solaris for PowerPC is currently in alpha test and is expected to go into beta sometime in June or July. The operating system is expected to ship before the end of the year, so it should appear at about the same time as OS/2 for PowerPC.
