Silicon Graphics Inc is giving up on the NQE Network Queuing Environment software it acquired along with Cray Research Inc and replacing it with the LSF load sharing facility software from Platform Computing Corp. NQE was originally developed by the Craysoft Inc arm of Cray for its Unix-based supercomputer line to handle batch processing and automatic load balancing. At the SC98 supercomputing show in Orlando, Florida yesterday, SGI said it had agreed with Toronto, Canada-based Platform to replace NQE with PlatformÆs LSF for workload management – a product which is also available on Windows NT, to which SGI is moving. SGI says it will bundle, distribute and co-market the LSF Suite to SGI customers. Others licensing the LSF technology include Compaq Computer Corp, Fujitsu Ltd, Hewlett-Packard Co, NEC Corp and Sun Microsystems Inc. SGI said it would continue to support NQE for the foreseeable future, and would provide transition assistance to help its users move over to LSF.
