RealNetworks Inc has signed a strategic porting and marketing agreement with Sun Microsystems Inc that will see its Real System 5.0 streaming and media products available on Sun Solaris-based workstations and servers. Video-enabled intranet users and systems hosting high-volume web sites will be able to use the technology over 28.8 Kbps phone modems or mid and broad bandwidth connections such as cable modems and xDSL. With Sun’s help, RealNetworks formerly Progressive Networks – of Seattle, Washington, will optimize RealServer 5.0 for Solaris 2.6, and will also port its RealEncoder and RealPlayer components to Solaris. RealNetworks also plans to develop a Java media framework-based RealPlayer to support cross-platform playback of RealVideo and RealAudio data streams without having to download plug-ins. Over 35 million RealPlayers have now been downloaded from the web.
