Energis Communications Ltd, the National Grid Co Plc’s UK wholesale telecommunications company, has signed a $100m contract with Canadian telecoms equipment manufacturer Northern Telecom Ltd. The deal is for 20 DMS-100 central office switches, which Energis will use to add into its UK telecoms network over the next five years. Each switch adds 50,000 telephone lines to the network, and with the purchase of 20, Energis is planning to extend its business telecoms services by one million customers over the contract’s life. Energis claims that deal is the first in series of agreements between the two companies.
