IBM Corp is claiming that its Unix-based two- and three-dimensional graphics systems top the industry for systems priced under $50,000, beating similarly-configured Silicon Graphics Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co boxes on a variety of benchmarks. Citing results from the Graphics Performance Characterisation Committee, IBM says it leads the pack in price, performance, and adherence to standards. In a head-to-head match with Silicon Graphics’s Indigo2R4400 Extreme system, IBM’s 37T/GXT1000-2 rated 11.3 and 3.52 on standard CDRS and Data Explorer benchmarks versus 8.3 and 3.28 for the Silicon Graphics system. IBM says it beat Hewlett-Packard’s 735/125 CRX-48Z by more than 25%, in both the PLBsurf93 surface rendering and PLBwire93 wire-frame drawing benchmarks. IBM also says its entry level 40P, with GXT150P graphics accelerator, beats the Silicon Graphics Indy 4600PC XLS by more than 50% in both the OpenGL CDRS and Data Explorer Benchmarks. IBM says that the 40P has an Xmark93 rating of 10.16, compared with a 5.94 rating for the Hewlett-Packard 712/60 HC.
