The new high-end multiprocessing server systems promised by Sil-con Graphics Inc for early next year, will use the latest R4400 RISC from its MIPS Technologies Inc arm, which delivers up to 113 SPECmark89 and 96 SPECint89. Initally, Silicon Graphics will string up to 16 of the CPUs together. Meanwhile, the Moun-ain View, California company’s three-dimensional Realityengine graphics subsystem, which plugs into its Iris Power and Crimson boxes is now available in the UK priced at from UKP80,000. Driven by up to eight Intel Corp 80860XP RISC chips, the Realityengine is claimed to perform at 800 MFLOPS and comes with up to 160Mb of memory for handling the screen display. With a pixel refresh rate of 320m per second, Silicon Graphics claims that it can deliver the same amount of data to a screen in one second as appears in during a typical 30second television advertisement.
