The Cray Research unit of Silicon Graphics Inc yesterday filed an anti-dumping petition against NEC Corp, accusing the Japanese company of underpricing supercomputers in an effort to gain US market share and injure competition. It alleges that NEC is taking an estimated $65m loss to supply vector supercomputers to the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, and that the proposed price was significantly less than charged by NEC on recent supercomputer sales to Japan.
