Rochester, New Hampshire-based Cabletron Systems Inc has unveiled and shipped Spectrum 2.0, an enhanced and portable version of its advanced enterprise network management system. The company claims that this is the first enterprise management system to be implemented for multiple Unix systems. Cabletron has also added three bundled applications to the core Spectrum software at no extra charge. Two of the new applications enhance Spectrum’s reporting capabilities, while the third application provides a Command Line Interface. In a related announcement, Cabletron revealed Spectrum for Open Systems, a suite of Spectrum applications that enables the company’s entire line of communications products to be managed across popular management systems. The suite of applications includes Spectrum for Hewlett-Packard Co’s HP OpenView, Spectrum for IBM NetView 6000, Spectrum for SunNet Manager and Spectrum for Novell NMS. Spectrum 2.0 supports IBM Corp’s RS/6000, Silicon Graphics Inc Indigo, Sun Microsystems Inc Solaris and Digital Equipment Corp 2100, 3100 and 5000 Ultrix systems, enabling users to convert their network management applications for multiple Unix systems. Cabletron’s enterprise manager is also fully Posix-compliant. The $15,000 Spectrum 2.0 base price includes Spectroserver with the Command Line Interface, AutoDiscovery and SNMP Protocol Module Imaging Toolkit. Spectrograph is also included in the core software, enabling the product to be displayed in an X Window/OSF Motif environment. Available in 90 days, Spectrum for Open Systems is priced at $4,000. This price includes the system adaptor and two device management modules. Additional management modules are available at $1,500.
