Broadcom has unveiled new wireless LAN (WLAN) router system-on-a-chip (SoC) offerings, which it claims to include enhanced features, performance and power consumption to enable a full line of 802.11n routers.

With the new Intensi-fi XLR SoC offering, Wi-Fi system OEMs can leverage silicon integration to reduce cost while maintaining multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) performance for streaming HD video throughout the home, the company said.

Broadcom said that it has optimised its new 802.11n router platform with its Accelerange technology for enhanced throughput and range performance along with features that minimise power consumption for green functionality modes.

According to Broadcom, its 802.11n design platform includes the BCM5357 with single-chip 2.4G entry-level IEEE 802.11n retail router; the BCM5358, a single-chip 2.4G IEEE 802.11n application router with I2S, NAND and wireless voice gateway support and the BCM47186, which is a single-chip dual-band IEEE 802.11n gigabit ethernet router. It uses integrated 65nm design process to reduce the number of system components on-chip.

In addition, the new Intensi-fi XLR platform built upon the company’s current 802.11n offering maintains data rates of up to 300Mbps in each band. The Accelerange technology added enables the deployment of several techniques that ensure wireless signals over a larger coverage area for video streaming and other low latency applications.

According to Broadcom, the Wi-Fi router platform features include, integrated IEEE 802.11n radio, media access controller (MAC), baseband, CPU, memory controller and 5-port ethernet switch; low cost, 2-layer board design; integrated 2.4GHz power amplifier; USB 2.0 host port; integrated WAPI security standard core; new applications and services support; PCM interface; and low power modes.

Chandra Viswanathan, senior product line manager for wireless LAN line of business at Broadcom, said: “Our new 802.11n solutions are optimised to deliver maximum performance for video, VoIP and gaming applications throughout the digital home and by adding features we enable our customers to differentiate their products.
