AT&T Co has shown its eagerness to support fibre-optic networks of the future at the 1990 Conference on Fibre Optic Communications by introducing new integrated lightwave telecommunication subsystem products. The products, from AT&T Microelectronics, are laser transmitters and receivers, and an isolated laser module, which together are designed to enable system designers to create telecommunication systems compatible with what AT&T is confident is the emerging industry standard of the future, Synchronous Optical Network, or SONET. The 1227-type Astrotec Lightwave Transmitter, 1310-type Astrotec Lightwave Receiver, 1230-type Astrotec Lightwave Transmitter, 1313A-type Astrotec Lightwave Regenerator and 246-type Astrotec Isolated Laser Module can be used singly and in combination, and are claimed to support the high-volume transmission requirements that SONET was developed to support. All the products are available in the US for use by system developers now, but no prices or further details were given.
