Acer America Corp, San Jose says it will introduce new models in each of its desktop, workstation and file server families specially configured for and pre-installed with Microsoft Corp’s Windows NT. Promising the broadest range of NT machines of any manufacturer, Acer will pre-install and support the 32-bit operating system on its 80486-based, R-series-based and upcoming Pentium systems, and will expand its technical support and service programme to include NT software. First up will be the AcerFormula 4000, based on its PICA 64-bit system architecture and using the R4000 RISC at from $3,600, offering two to five times the performance of 66MHz 80486DX2-based machines. Next month will also see NT configurations of the Acer Acros value line and AcerPower 486v workstation family. NT server configurations follow in late September with the AcerFrame 3000MP symmetric multiprocessing server family, capable of supporting up to four 33MHz of 50MHz 80486s, pre-installed with Windows NT Advanced Server software. And MIPS Technologies Inc part of Silicon Graphics Inc – reports that its systems vendors are experiencing strong demand for R-series-based personal computers running Windows NT. As well as Acer, vendors with Windows NT machines ready include Deskstation Technology Inc; NEC Technologies Inc and NeTpower Inc.
