Sun Microsystems Inc has a new version of the Silicon Graphics Inc-derived OpenGL graphics libraries for its Solaris Unix operating system. OpenGL 1.1.1 is said to be 50% faster for rendering performance, and is aimed at Sun’s CAD/CAM, medical imaging, industrial design and modeling, oil and gas exploration and animation customers. Sun says it’s one of the first to adopt the latest version of the OpenGL imaging extensions, and has optimized the libraries to work with its Elite 3D and Creator/Creator 3D Series 3 frame buffers. It supports the OpenGL ARB 1.1 specification, so can be ported to other platforms. The new version runs on Solaris 2.5.1 and Solaris 2.6. A runtime version is available from Sun’s Web site for free downloading, while the full development kit costs $245.
