Fresh from its acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp, Compaq Computer Corp has signed a deal with Canon Sales Co Inc in a bid to boost its PC business in the Japanese market. Despite a 13% share of the worldwide PC market Compaq has traditional flagged behind rivals in the Japanese market with around 3% market share. The bilateral agreement, described by the company as a broad-ranging business tie-up, will focus around Compaq’s line of consumer orientated Presario PCs. The deal will give Canon Sales exclusive distribution and sales rights for the Presario brand with the companies agreeing to undertake joint sales and marketing operations. A spokesperson for Compaq said it had gone to Canon Sales because of their strength in marketing and their broad network of sales channels.
