In another blow to Symantec Corp, which has recently warned of a poor second-quarter and cut 5% of its staff due to slowing sales, the McAfee Software unit of Network Associates Inc now claims it has displaced Symantec as the number two software publisher in the US, behind Microsoft Corp. McAfee is basing its claim on PC Data’s August report on the top 25 publishers by units. McAfee is banking on continuing is recent success following the introduction last month of its McAfee Office suite of utilities applications. The package includes VirusScan, Nuts & Bolts 98, First Aid 98, UnInstaller, Guard Dog, PGP Security, Hurricane 98, Oil Change, 2000 ToolBox, and Netopia Virtual Office. With its $100 price tag, the company figures it will substantially undercut the competition.
