Netscape Communications Corp says 750,000 new members registered for Netcenter last month, taking total site membership past seven million. Software downloads are driving a lot of traffic to the site, which estimates that it has served up 12.4 million copies of Communicator and Navigator since July. In June, the erstwhile browser company told analysts and press that it was in the business of converging portals with enterprise service providers (CI No 3,425). To do that, it needed a successful portal. Are we there yet? It depends who you ask. Media Metrix still ranks Netscape fifth by reach of web sites accessed from home, behind deadly rivals AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft and GeoCities. Still, it pays to shop around. Better news for Netcenter is to be found at the Hot100, which names the big N the most popular site on the web.
