The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India reached nearly 2.8 million units in the first quarter of 2012, recording a 6.6% increase over the first quarter of 2011 (Q1 2011), according to Gartner.
The growth in the PC market is driven by mobile PCs, with a 27% increase from the first quarter of 2011.
Gartner principal research analyst Vishal Tripathi said consumer buying accounted for 47% of total PC sales in the first quarter of 2012, which is down 3% from the fourth quarter of 2011.
"This underlies the fact that high inflation and increased prices have forced users to either prolong the life of their devices or postpone their purchase decision," he added.
The increase in excise and import duties also played a part in decision making postponement. The delay in rate contract from DGSND (Directorate General of Supplies & Disposals) did not help market growth."
Shipments of white boxes, including parallel import, which constituted 45% of the overall desktop market, declined 20% in the first quarter of 2012 compared to a year earlier.
Lenovo saw the largest PC shipments at 64% and reached the top position in the first quarter of 2012 due to the partial execution of the Tamilnadu government order, research revealed.
HP’s PC shipments grew 21% followed by Dell with a decline by 11% against the first quarter of 2011.
Multinational brands accounted for more than 50% of the total PC shipments in the first quarter of 2012, with the top four vendors:Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo, occupying 54.5% of the market.
India-based HCL’s PC market share declined to 5.8% in the first quarter of 2012, as it experienced a 13% year-on-year decline from the first quarter of 2011.
