Smartphones are likely to be replaced by the human mind as the technology of choice to control devices used in everyday life by 2025, according to a report.
A New York based professional association, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) carried out the survey on 3,000 technology enthusiasts, which showed a surge in mind-control applications and a decline in cellphones and mobile devices as primary tools for controlling technology.
According to IEEE, most of the future home based technologies are likely to be programmed to read individuals’ orders through their brainwaves.
The survey highlighted that 35% of the respondents favoured mind control as their preference to open their front door in 10 years, instead of smartphones, biometrics, or retina scanner.
Nearly 35% believe that mind control is to take charge of kitchen appliances, while 24% chose chellphones to do the task followed by age-old manual cooking at 26%.
One third of the technology enthusiasts prefer to control the lights using brainpower, while 30% prefer cellphones and 27% prefer motion sensors.
According to the survey, autonomous vehicles would be the preferred mode of transportation in future, but there was a huge difference in the response between men and women.
While 56% of men favoured autonomous driving, nearly 60% of the women preferred taking control of their vehicles manually.
However, both the sexes agreed on how they want to the devices in their everyday lives to be controlled.
IEEE member Diogo Monica said: "Consumer technology is advancing beyond the constraints of mobile devices to wearable form factors, and the next step in this evolution will be the ability to control technology in a hands-free way using brainpower alone.
"As a growing number of connected devices produces ongoing flows of data, security measures will need to keep pace to protect personal and corporate information as it travels over the IoT network."
