Google is shutting down its Google Code service next year, due to an increase of spam and abusive projects that are being hosted on the service.

Google said: "Lately, the administrative load has consisted almost exclusively of abuse management. After profiling non-abusive activity on Google Code, it has become clear to us that the service simply is not needed anymore."

The tech giant has asked developers to move their projects into better services like GitHub, Bitbucket, and SourceForge and highlighted that the company itself migrated thousands of its own open source projects to GitHub.

Google has stopped creation of new project on Google Code and mentioned that the site will become read-only starting this August before finally shutting its doors on 25th January 2016.

The search giant is providing migration tools to the existing users, and for the next three months the company will provide support for the projects that needs help with the migration.

Google added: "Google will continue to provide Git and Gerrit hosting for certain projects like Android and Chrome. We will also continue maintaining our mirrors of projects like Eclipse, kernel.org and others."
