HP has expanded its next-generation data centre (NGDC) at Alpharetta in Georgia, US, with the installation of a new data centre called HP EcoPOD.
The 40ft server unit, designed to host 2,000 HP ProLiant and/or HP Integrity servers, is located on-site and expands the compute space of one of the HP data centres that was a part of the company’s original transformation to consolidate 85 internal IT data centres worldwide to six NGDCs in the US.
HP estimates that the new system would require roughly 20,000 square feet of office space.
The company is planning to install a system with 500TB of HP XP P9500 Storage array, as well as HP networking and SAN switches at its offices in Atlanta. HP EcoPODs also are under construction at the two data centres in Austin, Texas.
HP said the additional compute capacity allows its flexibility to refresh the technology of the data centre itself.
The HP EcoPODs in the Atlanta were 25% pre-populated with HP BladeSystem c7000 enclosures housing 500 HP Integrity servers.
The rest of the HP EcoPOD will be populated with HP ProLiant Generation 8 (Gen8) servers for additional compute capacity to help operate the HP private cloud.
The HP EcoPOD includes adaptive cooling technology that automatically optimises the cooling modes between economization (free outside air) and direct expansion (DX) cooling modes.
The power usage effectiveness (PUE) rating, a measure of data centre energy overhead, will be 1.05, compared to a PUE of 2.0 or more for a traditional brick-and-mortar facility.
