Andover.net has acquired Slashdot, the community web site for Linux and open source developers. Slashdot creators Rob CmdrTaco Malda and Jeff Hemos Bates will finally get adequate resources while retaining complete creative control over content on the site – a clause they say they insisted upon. Meanwhile Acton, Massachusetts-based technical content company Andover gets an instant surge in traffic. The Slashdot audience is perhaps best known for creating the Slashdot effect, when unsuspecting web sites which are mentioned on Slashdot are suddenly overwhelmed with page requests. Andover estimates the size of the Slashdot effect at 2.5 million visitors and 35 million page impressions per month. What’s that traffic worth? It remains a secret, as terms of the deal were not disclosed.
