Wide Area Networking equipment manufacturer Larscom Inc has acquired privately-held Asynchronous Transfer Mode multiplexer manufacturer Netedge Systems Inc for $35m, with $26m in cash, and a $9m transfer of debt. Milpitas, California-based Larscom has taken over Research Triangle Park, North Carolina-based NetEdge for its Edge multiservice access family of multiplexers, that enable the aggregation of multiple Local Area Network traffic types over an ATM WAN connection. The switches are a good way into the ATM access equipment market for Larscom, which currently produces WAN equipment for use with leased line and Frame Relay connections. Larscom is buying heavily into ATM and the advantage which it offers for high speed WAN connections such as the creation of multiple independent secure Virtual Private Network connections over a single ATM link.
