With Al Shugart recently deposed from the company he founded, his partner Finis Conner looks set to return to the hard disk drive market after an absence of three years. Shugart and design engineer Conner started up Seagate Technology Inc together in 1979, but Conner later set himself up as a rival, forming Conner Peripherals Inc. Shugart got his own back in 1995 when Seagate acquired Conner for $1.19bn (CI No 2,754). The RAID storage systems division of Conner was later sold off again, and re- emerged as nStor Corp. But now Conner himself plans to return with his own company, San Jose, California-based Conner Technology. The company plans to concentrate on low-end disk drives for the sub $1,000 PC market.
