Smartcard manufacturer Gemplus SA, telco Sonera Oy and services firm EDS Corp have formed an organization called Raddicchio to establish standards for security in mobile phone e-commerce. The group believes that mobile e-commerce is being hampered by fears about the security of cellular phone transactions.
Finnish incumbent telco Sonera’s security arm SmartTrust will provide the private/public key infrastructure technology. France-based Gemplus will make the Sim cards which hold the security algorithm details, while Plano, Texas EDS will serve as the systems integrator. Raddicchio expects to have 50 members by the first quarter next year and hopes that the standards will trigger a spate of new mobile applications.
