Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd is working with NDS Ltd, provider of data broadcasting hardware to offer a back channel for content broadcast by satellite. The companies are now in the process of signing up an unnamed user for the service. The collaboration will enable users of NDS’ Data Broadcasting Network technology a faster and higher bandwidth return path using Gilat’s Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) technology, the companies said. VSAT is an ‘aerial modem’, or a card that is installed in the receiving PC along with a small external satellite dish. The companies anticipate that the collaboration with mean that corporate users will be able connect local networks together without the need for a wide area network. The Data Broadcasting Network lets users download multimedia content using satellite bandwidth at a faster rate than delivery via phone lines. Gilat Satellite of Petah Tikva, Israel develops, manufactures, markets and supports Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite earth stations and related hub equipment and software. NDS is based in Middlesex, UK.
