Price competition on the Japanese corporate telecommunications looks set to become stiffer now that WorldCom Inc has become the first non-Japanese operator to be awarded a class one telecoms operating license in the country, which gives the right to build a telecoms network. And WorldCom will not be alone – British Telecommunications Plc hopes to snag a similar class one license in coming weeks. WorldCom expects to install and begin operating its own synchronous digital hierarchy fiber optic network in Tokyo by the end of the year, using it to offer corporate voice and data services, a company spokesman said. Although WorldCom has not said how much it will pour into building the Tokyo fiber network, WorldCom’s investment has been estimated at $75.7m.
