Canal Plus, Europe’s largest pay-TV company, is expected to bid for the film division of Polygram, the Dutch group which has been bought by Seagram for $10.6bn. Seagram is expected to unload the loss-making film division as an early priority and Canal Plus is attracted by the back catalogue which includes films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Bean. The Polygram sale follows a decision by Dutch group Philips to sell its 75% share in order to concentrate on its core electronics business.
