As expected, Intel Corp finally released its much-delayed 820/Camino chipset at Comdex yesterday. The 820, Intel’s first PC chipset that supports Rambus DRAM chips, is being released in a configuration that supports two RIMM slots for memory, as the original three RIMM version proved to be bug-ridden and unreliable. Intel expects to see PCs based around the product shipping within thirty days. The company has also announced two attendant motherboards to complement the chipset. The Intel VC820 supports the Intel 820 Chipset with up to 512 Mb of RDRAM, while the Intel CC820 board combines the Intel 820 chipset with up to 512 Mb of SDRAM, using an adapter. The Intel 820 Chipset is priced at $42.50 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
