Italy’s second-largest mobile operator, Omnitel Pronto Italia SpA, has licensed the UP.Link server suite from Phone.com Inc, the US-based developer of software for mobile internet services based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

Omnitel will use UP.Link on its new portal site, to be called Omnitel 2000, enabling the company to offer wireless internet with value-added services and email to its seven million subscribers.

Omnitel 2000 is due to be launched on June 28. The first compatible handset is likely to be the One Touch POCKET made by Alcatel. Omnitel said the initial raft of services on the site will be in travel, news and entertainment, as well as electronic banking and Omnitel’s own pre-paid service and customer service application.
