Rumors published in the Nihon Keizai, that NEC Corp, Cisco Systems Inc, and Alcatel-Alsthom SA are working on a high speed Internet network for Europe have been categorically denied by Cisco. Cisco claims the details were leaked by NEC and are in error. The report claims that the companies are working on a high speed Asynchronous Transfer Mode network carrying Internet Protocol traffic, and be backed by the European Union in a similar way to the US Government’s research university-based Internet-2 project.
