Acquisitive ISP PSINet Inc has made two more purchases, this time taking it into the Caribbean market for the first time. It has agreed to purchase Caribbean Internet, based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is also reinforcing its presence in the Northeast of the US with the acquisition of The Internet Access Company (TIAC), serving greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts. Terms for both deals, as is usual with PSINet, were not disclosed.
Caribbean Internet has about 14,000 businesses and consumers using it for dedicated, dial-up and web hosting services. That amounts to about 30% of internet users on the island, says PSINet. According to unsourced studies, it claims about 13% of the 3.8 million population have PCs, but the number with internet access is not known. Anyhow, it says Caribbean is the second largest ISP in Puerto Rico.
TIAC has around 33,000 business and consumer customers using a variety of services. PSINet generally does not retain consumer customers in the US market, so it would not be a surprise to see them sold off to another ISP. It usually retains its consumer customers in markets outside the US, however.
