This purchase gives Dominion Telecom a tremendous metro network presence in this densely populated area of upstate New York, said Gregg T. Kamper, senior vice president and general manager of Dominion Telecom. It will allow us to provide cost effective and reliable end-to-end service solutions to our wholesale customers in these markets.
The fiber rings mark the second major agreement struck between Dominion Telecom and Telergy. The companies announced in November a long-term lease agreement that gave Dominion Telecom the right to use more than 1,900 fiber miles connecting the Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and New York City. The newly purchased metro rings enhance Dominion’s access and visibility in this market.
Within the last 12 months, Dominion Telecom has expanded network presence from Virginia and Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston and west to Buffalo and Cleveland. A new Chicago-to-Washington, D.C., high-count fiber route to be completed in the fourth quarter this year will serve Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Youngstown, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.
In addition, we will be operational in Pittsburgh and select cities in the western part of Virginia by July, Kamper said. We also will be operational with fiber linking New York City, Stamford, New Haven and Hartford, Conn., Providence, R.I., and Boston in July.
Dominion’s services include private line (DS-3 and OC-n), wavelength and dedicated Internet access services. Additional advance data services will roll out later this year. Dominion Telecom is deploying Alcatel’s state-of-the-art, Dense Wave Division Multiplexing and SONET technology throughout its expanded network.
